Healthy + Hapai–19 Weeks

Baby

Your baby’s sensory development is exploding! Her brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch. Some research suggests that she may be able to hear your voice now, so don’t be shy about reading aloud, talking to her, or singing a happy tune if the mood strikes you.

[Week 11 vs. Week 19]

Wow!  These side-by-side photos continually amaze me.  I mean, I can feel myself growing – and my clothes definitely feel different – but seeing it in photo form makes it pretty undeniable!

Speaking of growth, here’s what BabyCenter says about this week: “Think you’re big now?  You’ll start growing even faster in the weeks to come. As a result, you may notice some achiness in your lower abdomen or even an occasional brief, stabbing pain on one or both sides.”

Growing faster??  That’s hard for me to imagine, because I’ve already been having some growing pains, which is apparently due to my round ligaments and uterus stretching and growing.  My chiropractor and I have been working on my round ligaments together every week, but I got curious and decided to do some research on what’s really happening inside:

Round-Ligament1

“The round ligament is the ligament that holds the uterus in place by attaching it to the hipbone. In the second and third trimesters, when your uterus has expanded, hormones cause the ligaments to stretch, grow, and thicken to support the weight of the baby. In fact, the ligaments can grow from 2 to 12 inches over 9 months, as the uterus grows from about 3.5 inches long and 2.25 inches wide to almost 14 by 9 inches.” (Source.)

Whoa.  No wonder I’ve been feeling a bit uncomfortable.  That’s a lot of growth happening inside.

This week’s fun facts:

  • Weight gained so far: officially up 5 pounds since conception!
  • Sleep patterns: I’ve been having trouble sleeping this past week and think I’m gonna need to get back into a bedtime routine again…
  • Baby personality: My personality has changed a bit since conceiving, which my friends + family say should give me an idea of what the baby’s like.  If that’s true, then so far the baby seems to be decisive, strong-willed, passionate, loving and calm.
  • Movement: Rather than just feeling mostly flutters, I am now starting to feel thumps!  Laying in the sand with a scooped out hole for my belly makes the baby go crazy, so I try to do it often.  I love the feeling because it makes me feel like the baby’s healthy and happy in there.
  • Looking forward to: hearing the baby’s heartbeat again at our next midwife appointment!

I can’t believe I’m almost at the half-way point already!  Every day I’m so grateful for this experience and can’t believe it’s real.  The first few weeks seemed to drag on and now I can’t stop them from flying by!
