Haley.

Aloha and e kipa mai!  Welcome to Green Plate Dinners!

My name is Haley and I am an island girl striving to create balance and harmony in my very busy life.  Through my blog I hope to exhibit my passions of living a simple yet significant lifestyle that focuses on balance, creativity, harmony and enlightenment.

==

I left my island home on Maui for college at the University of Oregon in Eugene right after high school.  The fresh start was just what I needed to find myself.  While away – especially while abroad in Aotearoa/New Zealand – I discovered a true passion for health, wellness, and the outdoors.  More importantly, though, I discovered a deep love for myself, which in turn created the space for another person: my best friend, life-partner, and soul-mate Ben.

After graduating in 2007, I made the move back to the islands – this time with my best friend at my side.   Since moving home, I’ve reconnected with nature on a whole new level.  Ben and I are grateful every day to live in a beautiful (and modest) home on the slopes of Haleakala, where we are able to watch the sun set over the ocean or the mountains every day.

I married my best friend Benjamin on October 10th, 2009 at sunrise with our closest friends in attendance.  We have created a beautiful life for ourselves – surrounded by the most incredible people – and I have never felt more alive or excited about life as I do now!

In the early hours of June 26th, 2012, Ben caught our beautiful son Isaac La’akea as he was birthed into water at our home.  He has changed our entire Universe and brought us more joy than we could ever have imagined.  Raising my son has already proven to be the most profoundly meaningful and life-changing challenges of my life.  I feel blessed to be learning from my son a daily basis – pushing my boundaries and growing as he continues to grow.

Aside from my family, I am also passionate about many things, most notably community, health, wellness and creativity.

  • I became a certified fitness instructor in October of 2009, and a Certified Personal Trainer [National Academy of Sports Medicine] in April of 2012.
  • I am a labor and delivery doula, assisting Mamas through their rite of passage into Motherhood.
  • My favorite forms of creativity are cooking, jewelry-making, and writing.

We don’t have much, but we live fully.  I’ve got quite the balancing act happening between all the incredible things life has offered me and I am taking it all on with an open heart and a bright smile!  Join me on my journey in living a simple yet significant life.

I would love to get to know my readers better and am always more than happy to answer any questions you may have!  Leave a comment or e-mail me at simpleyetsignificant@gmail.com.

    Hi:

    Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments on my blog. I’m so glad you stopped by, because that means I got to click over and visit your site. Now I can live island life vicariously through you! My husband and I honeymooned in Hawaii (on Kauai), and are planning to come back next summer. We’ve never been to Maui, but would love to visit sometime – your photos definitely make it so appealing.

    I love the green/blue plate dinner idea. We have a couple of beautiful pottery plates that we use in a similar way. As I’m writing this, I realized it’s been too long since we got them out . . . .

    I love your blog, Haley! I’ve tried to maintain a couple blogs in the past, but I could never keep up with them for more than a few months 🙂

    Hi there! It’s nice to see another woman my age blogging on Maui, especially about healthful well balanced living. I created the Gluten Free Maui website, and I stumbled across your blog today while looking for “fresh tortillas of maui” on google. I’m so glad I’ve found your website, and it will be going directly into my feed reader. I am also a student through the University of Hawaii at Manoa outreach center here on Maui. I’m working toward my BA in Anthropology with a certificate in Women’s Studies. I hope to hear from you sometime!

    Hello Haley, from your distant cousin … we’re not the calabash kind, more like I’m on the east coast – that kind of distant…
    Take a peek at this lady Roxanne on http://www.beachwalks.tv … I think you’d both get along just fine… I’ve been following her since she started a few years ago… and now she is on Maui…

    Share it will you mom as well. . . I think they’d make great friends also. . .

    Home now, North Carolina;

    Hi! My name is Sue, and I’m from SlimKicker, a fitness/diet app and website. I saw your blog a few days ago and it captured my interest!

    I’m contacting you b/c we’re about to release a fitness tracker (similar to FitBit) early next year, and are looking for bloggers who would be interested in getting 1 for free to review when it is out (negative or positive).

    Would you be interested in doing this? You can email me at: sue (at) slimkicker (com) with ‘Review’ in the email heading if you are.

    In case you don’t know, our website SlimKicker basically turns your fitness/diet goals into a fun level-up game. The tracker will work with the website, and allow people to track calories burned and number of steps they walk automatically. The more they exercise, the more points they rack up! That’s basically how it will work.

    Anyway, hope to hear back either way…

    – Sue
